Short version
- Hiero is only for people aged 18 and older.
- Hiero brings people together for spontaneous activities. We do not organise those activities and we are not there.
- Be decent. Harassment, hate, threats, sexual services and anything involving minors are banned. Zero tolerance applies.
- Meet in public places. We cannot check who someone is.
- If something is wrong, report it. We respond within 24 hours.
- If we remove something of yours, we explain why and you can object.
1. Who we are and how to reach us
Hiero is made by [VOLLEDIGE NAMEN], two people in the Netherlands without a company. In these terms “we” or “us” means the two of us.
Point of contact for users (Article 12 Digital Services Act): the report button in the app, or [MELD E-MAILADRES]. You get an answer from a human, not only from a computer.
Point of contact for authorities (Article 11 Digital Services Act): [MELD E-MAILADRES]. This is also the contact point for removal orders for terrorist content.
You can write to us in Dutch or English.
For privacy questions: [CONTACT E-MAILADRES]. How we handle your data is in our privacy policy: https://[DOMEIN]/en/privacy.
2. What Hiero is, and what it is not
Hiero is an app where you post a quest: a spontaneous activity that starts within 7 days, in a public place, with a maximum number of people. Others can join and check in with a QR code. The group chat is deliberately small: it opens 1 hour before the start and closes 1 hour after the end, because Hiero is about actually meeting. The host can send updates about time, place or cancellation at any time. These are also shown on the quest page.
Hiero is not:
- An organiser. The host organises the quest. We organise nothing, are not there and do not check what happens.
- A payment service. No money goes through Hiero. You make your own agreements about costs with each other. We are not a party to them (see section 7).
- For businesses. No commercial hosts, no paid events, no advertising, no selling. Hiero is for people who want to do something with others themselves.
- A dating app or a place for sexual contacts. Escort services, paid sex and other sexual services are banned, as is looking for sexual encounters.
3. Who can use Hiero
- You are 18 or older. We ask for your date of birth when you sign up. If you lie about your age, we delete your account.
- You have one account, in your own name. You do not pretend to be someone else.
- What you fill in about yourself is true.
- You keep your account to yourself. If someone else uses your account, tell us right away.
- You accept these terms when you sign up, by switching on the checkbox yourself. Without that you cannot post anything or join anything.
4. House rules
Zero tolerance applies to these rules. If you break them, we can remove your content and suspend or delete your account immediately.
On Hiero you may not:
- Harass or bully anyone. Not after a quest either, and not outside the app with what you know about someone through Hiero. No unwanted sexual comments or advances.
- Spread hate. No attacks on people because of their origin, skin colour, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age or nationality.
- Threaten. No threats of violence, not even “as a joke”.
- Discriminate. A quest is open to everyone. The only exception is the “women only” safety setting (section 5). You may not refuse people because of their origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability or anything similar.
- Post illegal content or organise illegal activities. For example drug dealing, weapons, violence, fraud or infringing someone else’s copyright.
- Spam. No advertising, no fake quests, no mass messages, no links to lure people to other services.
- Do anything involving minors. Hiero is 18+ only. Do not invite minors. We report anything that sexualises or exploits children to the police. See our child safety standards: https://[DOMEIN]/en/child-safety.
- Share other people’s data or photos without consent. No addresses, phone numbers, the exact spot of a quest, screenshots of the chat or photos of people who did not agree to it.
- Offer or look for sexual services. No escort services, no paid sex, no nude photos.
- Misuse Hiero. Do not try to break in, get around the security, collect data (scraping), work out the exact spot of a quest, or create fake accounts.
5. Women-only quests
- A host can set a quest to “women only”. This is a safety feature, so women can meet up with other women.
- It works with the gender you state yourself. Trans women are women and can join.
- Your gender is never visible to others. We only use it for this.
- Do not state a false gender to get into these quests. That is a serious violation.
- You may only use this setting for informal, non-commercial meetups.
- We cannot check whether what someone states is true. So take care at these quests too.
6. Meeting safely
We cannot check who someone is, what someone intends or whether a profile is accurate. So look out for yourself:
- Meet in a public place. This is required when you create a quest.
- Tell a friend where you are going and with whom.
- Make sure you can leave on your own. Do not share your address.
- Do not go along to another place if you do not want to. You can always leave.
- Do not drink more than you want and do not leave your drink unattended.
- If something does not feel right, trust that.
- In an emergency, call 112. Afterwards, report what happened in the app.
7. Costs
- A host can state what a quest costs per person, for example an entry ticket or food. This is information only.
- Costs are what the activity itself costs. Everyone pays their own share or you split it among yourselves. A host may not make money from a quest.
- No money goes through Hiero. We are not a party to agreements about money between users and we do not settle disputes about money.
8. What you post
- What you post (quests, photos, messages, your profile) stays yours.
- You allow us to store it and show it in Hiero and on the share page, as long as that is needed to run Hiero. That permission ends when you delete it, except for what our privacy policy says we still have to keep (for example with a report).
- Only post what you are allowed to post. You are responsible for what you post.
9. How we moderate
Reporting and blocking. Every quest, profile, message and photo has a report button. You can also block someone. People who blocked each other no longer see each other’s quests, profile or messages anywhere.
Who decides. Reports are reviewed by us, so by humans. We respond within 24 hours. When there is immediate danger, we act as fast as we can.
Automated tools. We use a word filter that can hold back texts with banned words or send them for review. New photos may be reviewed before others see them. [CHECK: only keep what is built] A computer never suspends or deletes an account on its own. A human always decides.
What we can do. Depending on how serious it is:
- nothing, if no rule was broken;
- give you a warning;
- remove content or make it invisible;
- restrict your account, for example no posting quests or chatting for a while;
- suspend your account, for a while or for good;
- delete your account permanently;
- involve the police (section 11).
When choosing, we look at how serious it is, whether it happened before and what it means for others.
What a suspension means. While your account is suspended, you cannot use Hiero. You can still delete your account. Quests you host that are not over yet are called off, you leave the quests you joined or asked to join, and you no longer hear when a spot opens up in a quest. The suspension also applies to another account with the same email address, also when it is written a little differently. That follows from our decision about your account.
An explanation with every decision. If we remove something of yours or restrict your account, you get an explanation (Article 17 Digital Services Act). It says what we did, for how long, why, which rule or law applies, whether an automated tool was involved, and how to object.
Objecting. If you disagree with a decision, you can object within 6 months. Reply to the explanation you received, or email [MELD E-MAILADRES]. Where possible, the other one of us looks at your case again. We tell you within [14] days what we decide and why. You can also go to court, or file a complaint with the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), the Digital Services Act regulator in the Netherlands.
If you reported something, we tell you what we did about it.
10. Reporting illegal content, also without an account
Anyone can tell us that there is illegal content on Hiero, also people without an account (Article 16 Digital Services Act). Use the form at https://[DOMEIN]/en/report, the “Report” button on a quest’s share page, or email [MELD E-MAILADRES].
Include in your report:
- why you think it is illegal;
- where it is, for example the link to the quest;
- your name and email address (not needed for a report about child sexual abuse);
- that you make the report in good faith and believe it is accurate.
We confirm your report, review it carefully and tell you what we decided.
11. Police and emergencies
- If someone’s life or safety is in danger, we call 112 or report it to the police. The Digital Services Act requires this (Article 18) when we suspect a criminal offence that threatens someone’s life or safety.
- We always report child sexual abuse to the police and to the Offlimits hotline.
- We carry out orders from authorities, such as the police, a court or the Dutch Authority for Online Terrorist and Child Sexual Abuse Material (ATKM), as the law requires.
12. Liability
[JURIST: a lawyer must write this section.] Below is only what we want to achieve. This is not a valid text yet.
- You use Hiero at your own risk. We do not organise the quests and we are not there.
- We are not liable for what users do or post, or for what happens at a quest.
- Hiero is free. We do our best to make the app work well, but we cannot promise it always works and has no errors.
- We limit our liability as far as the law allows. This does not apply to intent or gross negligence on our part, or where the law does not allow us to limit liability.
13. Ending your account
You. You can always delete your account in the app under [Profile > Settings > Delete account], or without the app at https://[DOMEIN]/en/delete-account. The privacy policy says what we delete and what we keep.
Us. We can suspend or delete your account if you break these terms seriously or repeatedly, or if the law requires us to. You then get an explanation and you can object (section 9).
If Hiero stops. We tell you at least [30] days in advance, so you can download your data.
14. Changes
We may change these terms, for example when Hiero changes or the law changes. For important changes we tell you at least [30] days in advance in the app or by email, unless it has to be faster for safety or because of the law. If you do not agree with the new terms, you can delete your account.
15. Law and disputes
- Dutch law applies to these terms.
- If you live in another EU country, you keep the protection that the law of your country gives you.
- If you have a complaint, email us first: [MELD E-MAILADRES]. We first try to find a solution together.
- [JURIST: competent court]
