About Hiero
What is Hiero?
An app for spontaneous plans near you. Someone posts a quest with a time, a spot and room for a few people, and others join. Today or this week, never three weeks from now.
Is it free?
Yes. Some quests cost something (a ticket, a dinner): the host says so up front, with the price per person.
Where does it work?
In Amsterdam, for now. New cities are in the works.
When can I get the app?
Android comes first, iOS follows. Sign up and you are the first to know.
Count me in →Why is it called Hiero?
From “ik ben hiero”, Amsterdam for “I’m here”: what you text when you arrive. It is also the stamp you get when you actually meet.
Joining and hosting
Who can join?
Everyone from 18. You sign in with a code we e-mail you, no password, and give your birthdate when you sign up.
How far ahead can I plan?
Up to a week ahead. Most quests are today, that is the fun. Once it is over, it disappears from the map.
How many people?
From 2 to 20, the host included. If someone brings a +1, that counts too.
Does the host have to let me in?
Usually not: you join straight away. A host can choose to approve people first, handy for a party at their place. Then you ask to join and the host says yes or no.
Can I bring someone?
If the host allows a +1. You see it on the quest.
What is checking in?
Once you are there, you scan each other’s code in the app and get the stamp: ik ben hiero. That is how you count the quests you really did.
Safety and privacy
Who sees where I am?
Nobody. The app uses your location to find quests near you while it’s open, and sends only a rough centre (about a kilometre).
Why do I only see the exact spot later?
Before the host lets you in, you only see the area, 100 to 300 metres off. The exact spot is only for people who are in.
More about safety →What is a women-only quest?
A host can make a quest for women only. Nobody else sees it, not even through a share link.
Where do quests happen?
Somewhere nice in the city: a café, a park, a square. Always a public place, the form for a new quest says so too.
What if something feels off?
Leave, block, report. In an emergency, call 112 first.
Report something →How long are chat messages kept?
The group chat opens an hour before the start. 48 hours after the quest, the messages are gone.
Your account
Where is my data?
In the EU, in Frankfurt. No ads and no trackers.
Privacy policy →Can I block someone?
Yes, wherever you see them. After that you no longer see each other’s quests, profile or messages anywhere.
How do I delete my account?
On the Delete your account page. It says how it works and what goes.
